In adherence to federal mandates, the Ogun State government has launched the Safe School Initiative to improve the safety of students and educators amidst rising nationwide security threats. Professor Abayomi Arigbabu, the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, announced this development during a radio interview, noting that a multi-stakeholder committee has been established to manage the project.
This initiative integrates local communities with law enforcement to address the dangers of kidnapping and violence near educational facilities. While acknowledging that security is primarily a federal concern, the state is implementing specific measures like the phased construction of perimeter fencing for public schools. Although Arigbabu admits fences are not foolproof, they represent a vital layer of defense.
To ensure rapid response times, school administrators must now maintain direct contact with local Divisional Police Officers. This communication link allows for emergency coordination and regular threat assessments. Furthermore, the government is prioritizing high-risk border and rural areas by increasing patrols from both the police and the Amotekun Corps. By fostering community vigilance and active surveillance, the state aims to deter criminal activity and ensure that schools remain safe environments for learning.
