Plateau State reports 311 successful snakebite treatments via free anti-venom initiative

Plateau State officials report a 99% success rate in treating 311 snakebite patients through a government-funded anti-venom program, with more supplies secured for the upcoming farming season.

Between December 2025 and June 2026, the Plateau State Government provided successful care for 311 out of 312 individuals suffering from snakebites through its complimentary anti-venom scheme. Pharm. Kim Jerry Bot, who leads the Plateau State Drugs and Medical Commodities Management Agency (PS-DMCMA), confirmed these figures in Jos. He credited the program’s effectiveness to Governor Caleb Mutfwang, whose leadership ensured that patients could receive life-saving treatment at no cost.

Bot explained that the government distributed Echitab® Anti-Snake Venom to medical centers across 15 local government areas. This strategic move removed financial obstacles for citizens and helped citizens get treatment more quickly. Consequently, the state has seen higher public trust in medical services, fewer fatalities, and a more robust emergency response network.

As the farming season begins—a time when snake encounters typically become more frequent—Governor Mutfwang has authorized the purchase of more anti-venom supplies. This proactive step aims to prevent shortages and ensure that hospitals can continue to handle emergencies without delay. The ongoing program highlights the administration’s dedication to improving public health, lowering avoidable death rates, and ensuring residents across Plateau State have access to quality, reliable emergency care.
