Former Senator Effiong Dickson Bob, who represented Akwa Ibom North-East, has addressed the recent police involvement regarding Ewa Okpo, a lawyer frequently called Street Lawyer. During a Wednesday press event, Bob stated that filing a petition was a legitimate exercise of his legal rights after he was publicly maligned.
The controversy stems from an online video where Okpo criticized Bob, labeling him a master of political manipulation and accusing him of engaging in questionable political patronage. Bob expressed that he felt compelled to inform the authorities to ensure a proper investigation, noting that he chose this formal process over physical confrontation. He clarified that he simply submitted a petition and did not dictate how law enforcement should proceed.
Bob explained that his original comments, which triggered the lawyer’s reaction, were made to defend Governor Umo Eno. He asserted that as a political leader in the district, he has a duty to stand by the governor, arguing that public debate should center on governance and policy rather than personal attacks or character assassination. He emphasized that criticism of the government remains valid, provided it is constructive rather than centered on an official’s private life or family.
The former senator further alleged that Okpo targeted him on social media despite not being explicitly named in his previous remarks. Bob characterized these online posts as malicious attempts to harm his standing. He concluded by urging critics to prioritize substantive issues over baseless claims regarding his private affairs and business interests.
