The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) has raised alarms regarding frequent court orders forcing the deregistration of political parties, claiming these actions jeopardize Nigeria’s constitutional framework. Speaking in Abuja on Wednesday, national spokesperson Martins Egbeola described the current wave of rulings as an unsettling development.
Egbeola argued that these judicial decisions could severely damage the nation’s multi-party structure, effectively restricting the public’s right to participate in politics or form associations. He highlighted the recent ruling against the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and earlier court mandates targeting five other parties as clear indicators of a declining democratic landscape.
The IPAC official emphasized that such trends stifle political variety and erode the protections promised by the constitution. He warned that there is a growing risk that state institutions are being influenced by external forces to serve specific political agendas. Consequently, Egbeola called upon the National Judicial Council to protect the integrity and independence of the bench, stressing that the judiciary must never be used as a political weapon.
