IPAC Warns Judicial Deregistration Rulings Threaten Nigeria’s Multiparty System

The Inter-Party Advisory Council warns that frequent court-ordered deregistration of political parties is undermining Nigeria’s multi-party democracy and constitutional rights.

The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) has raised alarms regarding recent court orders mandating the removal of political parties from the official register, claiming these decisions imperil the nation’s democratic foundations. Martins Egbeola, the group’s national publicity secretary, described this pattern as highly problematic during a Wednesday interview in Abuja.

Egbeola argued that ongoing judicial interventions could erode the multi-party framework and restrict the fundamental rights of Nigerians to participate in politics. Referencing the removal of five parties and the recent case involving the National Democratic Congress, he warned that these actions shrink the democratic environment. He suggested that such trends might indicate a concerted effort by partisan actors to influence state institutions for their own benefit.

Addressing the National Judicial Council, Egbeola called for stricter adherence to impartiality and constitutional integrity. He emphasized that the judiciary must remain an independent arbiter rather than a political instrument. IPAC maintains that a diverse landscape of political ideologies is a constitutional strength, not a liability. Egbeola cautioned that efforts to force a one-party system through legal manipulation are destined to fail, as the Nigerian public is committed to maintaining a pluralistic political culture.
