England’s rugby union team is well-prepared for the physical strain of playing at high altitude against South Africa this Saturday, according to defence coach Sir Kevin Sinfield. The Nations Championship opener will take place at Ellis Park in Johannesburg, located nearly 6,000 feet above sea level. England has not secured a victory at this stadium since 1972, but the team arrived 10 days early to allow for proper environmental acclimation.
Sinfield noted that the scheduling was specifically chosen to help the players adjust to the lower air pressure, which reduces oxygen intake. While the coach observed his own blood oxygen levels fluctuating upon arrival, he stated that he has since stabilized. The squad remains highly motivated for the encounter, viewing the match as a significant opportunity to test their potential against the reigning world champions.
Beyond his coaching duties, Sinfield was recently knighted for his fundraising efforts regarding motor neurone disease, a cause inspired by his late friend and teammate, Rob Burrow. He plans to continue his advocacy work with a new endurance challenge in September, where he will visit 12 Super League grounds while running nearly 28 miles daily. For Sinfield, these efforts serve as an ongoing commitment to the legacy of those lost to the disease.
