Israeli Defence Chief Declares Indefinite Military Presence in Lebanon, Syria, and Gaza

Defence Minister Israel Katz has confirmed that Israeli military forces will occupy security zones in Lebanon, Syria, and Gaza indefinitely to ensure the safety of Israeli citizens.

Israel’s defence minister, Israel Katz, announced on Wednesday that Israeli troops are set to maintain an indefinite presence within designated security zones in Lebanon, Syria, and Gaza. Katz emphasized that this ongoing military occupation is intended to shield Israeli communities from extremist threats, clarifying that there is currently no scheduled timeline for a withdrawal.

Speaking at a memorial event for soldiers lost in the 2006 Lebanon war, Katz underscored that the Israel Defense Forces will not vacate these security sectors. He further cautioned Iran against retaliation regarding Israeli operations in Lebanon, warning that any aggression from Tehran would be met with significant force.

While a US-brokered agreement was recently signed to promote peace and the disarmament of Hezbollah, Israeli leadership remains firm. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other officials have insisted that forces will remain in southern Lebanon until Hezbollah is fully disarmed. Conflict in the region escalated in early March following Hezbollah’s rocket attacks, leading to an Israeli ground invasion and heavy airstrikes. Reports from Lebanon’s health ministry indicate that nearly 4,300 people have died since the hostilities commenced, while the Israeli military reports the loss of 38 soldiers and one contractor.

In Syria, Israel continues to conduct airstrikes and incursions with the stated goal of creating a demilitarized zone in the south following the ouster of Bashar al-Assad. Meanwhile, in Gaza, where Israeli troops control roughly 70 percent of the land, both the military and Hamas frequently accuse one another of breaching the ceasefire that has been in place since last October.
