President Bola Tinubu has advocated for all United Nations member countries to integrate the UN Charter’s preamble directly into their own national constitutions. He argues that this action would serve as a vital mechanism to uphold international justice, human dignity, and global harmony.
Dr. Jimoh Ibrahim, Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, delivered this message on Monday during a preliminary General Assembly session in New York. Dr. Ibrahim, who heads the UN Fifth Committee, noted that the President views this integration as a way to solidify the founding principles of the global organization.
In a formal statement, Ibrahim explained that such a constitutional shift would keep the shared duties of humanity at the forefront of national governance. The initiative seeks to strengthen international law, protect fundamental rights, and foster a spirit of cooperation among states. During the meeting, international delegates expressed positive support for the proposal, signaling a collective desire for enhanced global unity.
This initiative highlights Nigeria’s dedication to multilateralism and its desire to see a more effective United Nations. By embedding these ideals into domestic laws, the President hopes to make the core values of the UN a permanent fixture in the governance of member nations.
