INEC Confirms Electronic Result Transmission for Osun 2026 Polls

INEC plans to use BVAS technology and the IReV portal for the 2026 Osun governorship election while cracking down on vote buying.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that it will upload election results to the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV) to bolster transparency during the upcoming Osun governorship election. Muhammed Haruna, the commission’s National Commissioner, explained that the agency would also utilize the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) for authenticating voters.

Haruna noted that the recent Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise in Osun successfully registered 381,817 new voters out of 499,809 total applications. He referenced the success of similar technology in the Ekiti governorship election, where BVAS maintained a 96 percent functionality rate, and IReV uploads reached 98 percent completion.

Addressing concerns regarding election integrity, Haruna identified vote buying as a critical threat. The commission is actively collaborating with anti-graft agencies to combat the issue. He highlighted that under Section 22 of the Electoral Act 2026, engaging in vote trading is a serious crime that could result in a fine of at least five million naira, up to two years in prison, or a ten-year ban from holding public office.
