Edo State Government Demands Explanation from AAU Vice Chancellor Over NELFUND Loan Access Issues

The Edo State Ministry of Education has queried the Vice Chancellor of Ambrose Alli University, Professor Eunice Omonzejie, over the failure of students to access NELFUND loans, requiring a response by July 10, 2026.

The Edo State Ministry of Education has formally queried Professor Eunice Omonzejie, the Vice Chancellor of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, regarding the inability of students to secure loans through the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND). A letter dated June 24, 2026, signed by Omionawele P.O. on behalf of the Permanent Secretary, highlighted that no students from the institution participated in the NELFUND program during the 2025/2026 academic session, despite the Federal Government having disbursed N242 billion for the initiative.

The ministry has requested that the Vice Chancellor explain the specific barriers preventing students from accessing these funds and what steps the administration has taken to rectify the situation. A formal response is required by July 10, 2026, so that the ministry can update Governor Monday Okpebholo on the matter. This query follows a March 2025 announcement by the state government, led by then-Commissioner for Education Dr. Pally Iyamu, regarding a partnership to make higher education more affordable through loan provisions and monthly stipends.

To promote this program, the government previously conducted a two-day sensitization exercise in March 2025 across all three senatorial districts, including sessions at the state polytechnic, Ambrose Alli University, and Edo University, Iyamho. The current administrative inquiry aims to ensure that Edo students are successfully leveraging the state-backed financial aid initiative.
