Bordeaux suffers demotion to French fifth division

Historic French football club Bordeaux faces a further drop to the fifth division following ongoing financial issues and a failed funding gap.

French football institution Bordeaux has been handed a demotion to the fifth tier of the domestic league system by the DNCG, the sport’s financial regulatory body. This decision follows a failure by the club and owner Gerard Lopez to bridge a nine-million-euro financial shortfall.

Previously champions of Ligue 1 in 2009, the historic organization has been negotiating a potential sale with the British investment group Sparta Capital. The club has announced its intention to appeal this ruling. They aim to use the time allowed by regulations to secure the necessary funding for the upcoming 2026-2027 season. An appeals committee is expected to review the case in approximately two weeks.

Bordeaux, which counts legends like Zinedine Zidane and Jean Tigana among its former players, dropped from the second division to the fourth tier earlier in 2024 following bankruptcy filings. This shift marked the club’s transition to amateur status, ending nearly nine decades as a professional side.
