Jared Kushner and US special envoy Steve Witkoff have arrived in Doha to consult with mediators regarding ongoing US-Iran negotiations. Despite their presence in the Qatari capital, a spokesperson for the foreign ministry, Majed al-Ansari, confirmed that no direct meetings between the US and Iranian delegations are scheduled for the immediate future.
The diplomatic visit follows a tense period of reciprocal military strikes between the two nations, which threatened a recent memorandum of understanding aimed at ending the four-month conflict. That agreement, facilitated by Qatar and Pakistan, sought to address the status of the Strait of Hormuz and broader regional stability. While initial discussions in Switzerland involving US Vice-President JD Vance and Iranian Parliamentary Speaker Mohammed Bagher Ghalibaf showed promise, recent hostilities have complicated the path toward a final deal.
Majed al-Ansari clarified that the US envoys are in Doha to address broader regional concerns, including the situation in Lebanon, rather than to engage in face-to-face negotiations with Tehran. While lower-level technical discussions continue, the release of $6 billion in frozen Iranian assets remains contingent upon future progress in high-level talks that have yet to materialize.
