Senator Adolphus Wabara, former Senate President and PDP BoT Chairman, alongside former vice-presidential candidate Senator Ben Obi, are engaging with Nigerians living in the United States to advocate for transparent and fair elections in 2027. These cross-party discussions aim to unite Nigerians at home and abroad to protect the nation’s democratic structures and prevent the erosion of political diversity.
During a discussion with Vanguard, Wabara noted that these meetings address growing anxieties over the shrinking democratic space and the necessity for a united front to uphold constitutional rule. He highlighted that attendees expressed deep concern regarding the pressure placed on opposition factions and doubts concerning the independence of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Wabara emphasized that these consultations are focused on reaching a national consensus to restore trust in the electoral process. He described the current state of Nigeria’s democracy as being in the Intensive Care Unit, warning that immediate action is required to avoid endangering the nation’s future. He urged all citizens, including civil society and professional organizations, to prioritize the national interest over political party affiliations to ensure a fair outcome in 2027.
Furthermore, Wabara encouraged eligible citizens to register for their Permanent Voter Cards before the July 10 deadline, asserting that active participation is the primary defense against electoral fraud. This initiative builds on similar high-level dialogues Wabara held recently in London with Chief Bode George to discuss building a coalition to secure the integrity of upcoming elections.
