NELFUND Warns Universities Against Unfair Charges and Withholding Student Refunds

NELFUND is taking action against universities that have failed to refund students and are implementing unauthorized fee increases despite receiving federal support.

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has issued a stern rebuke to tertiary institutions engaging in dishonest activities. The agency reports that several schools are refusing to reimburse students for tuition payments made before the fund disbursed fees directly to the institutions. Additionally, NELFUND expressed alarm over sudden and unexplained hikes in university fees, stating these actions actively hinder the goals of the federal student loan initiative.

Director of Strategic Communications Oseyemi Oluwatuyi stated that the program, launched by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is intended to remove financial obstacles rather than create new stresses for learners. The agency has begun formal discussions with the involved schools to rectify these issues and mandate that tuition adjustments remain clear and reasonable.

NELFUND remains dedicated to maintaining the transparency of this national initiative. Oluwatuyi confirmed that the agency is taking decisive action to protect students from exploitation and ensure that the integrity of the loan scheme is upheld for all participants.
