The Southern Nigeria Peoples’ Mandate (SNPM) has formally requested that President Bola Tinubu cease any efforts to transform Nigeria into a one-party state for the sake of his 2027 reelection campaign. In a statement released following a meeting led by Chairman Augustine Chukwudozie, the organization highlighted growing concerns regarding judicial actions that appear aimed at diminishing the influence of opposition parties.
The group noted that conflicting legal proceedings, where lower courts revisit matters already settled by the Supreme Court, have cast doubt on judicial independence. The SNPM claims that the current administration is prioritizing political dominance over the urgent needs of the populace. They argue that government resources are being utilized to stifle competition rather than addressing severe economic pressures, such as skyrocketing fuel prices, high inflation, and the weakening of the national currency.
Highlighting the irony of the situation, the group noted that President Tinubu, once an activist during the June 12 democratic movement, is now facing accusations of undermining the very democratic values he previously championed. They specifically called upon the National Judicial Council (NJC) to scrutinize judges who are perceived to be damaging the reputation of the courts, emphasizing that the judiciary must remain a neutral pillar of society.
Finally, the SNPM encouraged the Nigerian public to remain vigilant and protect democratic integrity. The group urged citizens to actively resist electoral manipulation and ensure that the 2027 election results accurately reflect the will of the people.
