NDLEA Modernizes Tactical Operations by Introducing Firearms After 36 Years

Brig.-Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa has announced the formal induction of AK-47 rifles and pistols for NDLEA officers to enhance tactical responses against armed drug trafficking groups.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has officially begun integrating AK-47 rifles and modern pistols into its tactical operations to counter the rising threat of violent drug syndicates. The agency’s Chairman, Brig.-Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), introduced this initiative during a specialized weapons handling training event at the NDLEA Academy in Jos, Plateau State.

Represented by his Chief of Staff, Col. Murtala Aminu, Marwa highlighted this shift as a significant turning point in the agency’s 36-year history. He noted that the evolving nature of drug trafficking requires officers to be better equipped for dangerous field conditions. He emphasized that these tools are essential for protecting both the agency’s personnel and the public, while crediting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his support in enhancing the agency’s capabilities.

Marwa also acknowledged the Office of the National Security Adviser for facilitating the initial delivery of arms. The procurement, managed through the China North Industries Corporation (NORINCO), is in its final phase, with additional shipments expected via collaboration with the Nigerian Air Force. Selected master trainers at the event will be responsible for instructing colleagues at various commands across the country, ensuring that every officer undergoes mandatory weapons handling training.

Concluding his address, Marwa stressed the importance of strict discipline and professional ethics. He warned against complacency, asserting that the use of firearms must remain grounded in the rule of law and sound judgement. The initiative marks a new phase in the agency’s efforts to dismantle criminal networks and maintain its recent momentum in curbing illegal drug activities.
