US Supreme Court Overturns Trump Move to Terminate Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook

In a 5-4 ruling, the Supreme Court has blocked President Trump’s bid to fire Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, citing a lack of due process.

The United States Supreme Court has prevented President Donald Trump from removing Lisa Cook, a governor at the Federal Reserve, in a verdict that reinforces the central bank’s autonomy. In a narrow 5-4 ruling, the justices determined that the current administration failed to grant Governor Cook the necessary due process required to dispute her dismissal.

The case now returns to lower courts. If the White House intends to persist with the termination, it must substantiate claims that Cook engaged in mortgage fraud, while also providing the governor with a legal platform to refute the accusations. Cook has consistently denied these claims, which critics argue were manufactured to increase political influence over monetary policy.

Federal Reserve governors are legally protected from being fired without specific cause. This statutory safeguard is designed to insulate the central bank from political interference, prioritizing long-term economic stability. Paul Clement, representing Cook, previously warned that bypassing these procedures would effectively nullify the protections established by Congress.

President Trump had initiated the removal process in August via social media, alleging that Cook misrepresented her primary residence on mortgage documents to secure more favorable interest rates. Conversely, Solicitor General John Sauer argued on behalf of the White House that the public announcement was sufficient notice and that the alleged negligence warranted immediate executive action.
