Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has formally requested that the Federal Government focus its efforts on repairing and maintaining the nation’s current road network instead of initiating new construction projects. Through his Facebook page, Obi emphasized that restoring major highways to a usable state is more vital than pursuing new infrastructure announcements.
Obi highlighted the Asaba–Benin Road as a prime example of a critical route currently in a state of decay. This highway connects numerous states across the South-South and South-East to Lagos, yet its poor condition continues to trigger severe traffic congestion and economic strain for transport operators and travelers alike.
The former governor of Anambra State noted that this road serves as a representative case for many highways throughout the country. He argued that government resources should prioritize fixing these essential links, which provide immediate relief, rather than launching new projects solely for political optics. According to Obi, the public interest is better served by functional roads than by high-profile construction plans that offer little practical benefit to the average citizen. He concluded his statement by reaffirming his hope for a better future for the nation.
