Prominent tennis stars, featuring top-ranked players Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka, have called off their protest regarding prize money at Wimbledon. This announcement was made by their representatives on Monday.
Previously, the athletes intended to restrict their media engagements to 15 minutes throughout the opening week of the tournament. This action followed a similar stance taken during the French Open earlier this year. The players are advocating for their share of tournament revenue to increase from 15 percent to 22 percent.
Wimbledon officials responded by raising prize money by 20 percent, a gesture the players acknowledged as positive. Following productive discussions, representatives confirmed that normal media operations will resume. While this specific action has ended, the players noted that broader financial issues persist and they are awaiting formal proposals from tournament organizers.
All England Club chief Sally Bolton welcomed the resolution, stating that the focus should remain on the competition. Wimbledon singles champions will now receive £3.6 million, an increase from the previous £3 million payout. Aryna Sabalenka expressed a desire for a permanent, satisfactory solution that would eliminate the need for future protests.
