The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has granted the federal government a four-week extension to address its grievances, pushing back the threat of a potential strike. This decision was reached during an Extraordinary National Executive Council meeting held online this past Saturday.
Signed by the union’s leadership, including Dr. Mohammad Suleiman, Dr. Shuaibu Ibrahim, and Dr. Abdulmajid Ibrahim, the formal statement explained that the group reviewed the government’s progress following a previously expired 21-day notice. While some advancements were noted, the association stressed that many welfare and professional issues remain unaddressed.
The extended deadline is intended to give officials more time to resolve critical matters before the next meeting in Gombe State. Specific complaints highlighted by the group include the 2026 Medical Residency Training Fund, salary delays for house officers, unpaid arrears related to the 25 and 35 percent CONMESS review, and long-standing professional allowance debts. NARD leadership has been directed to prepare for industrial action should these demands not be met by the end of the four-week period.
