The Abia State Government has officially initiated the enforcement of a ban on commercial motorcycle transit within specific zones of Umuahia, Aba, and Ohafia. Okey Kanu, the Commissioner for Information, issued a Sunday statement calling on residents to support the designated task force charged with carrying out this directive.
While recognizing that many residents rely on motorcycle operations for income, officials stated the restriction is a necessary step to enhance public safety and security. The administration pledged that enforcement teams would operate with professionalism and fairness. The penalty for violating the ban has been adjusted downward to 20,000 Naira, replacing the initial 50,000 Naira fine.
Under these new guidelines, all private motorcycles and tricycles must undergo formal registration and documentation. Furthermore, private motorcycle riders are strictly prohibited from transporting passengers. Authorities noted that vehicles seized by law enforcement will be returned to their owners once proper documentation and verification are completed. Residents are encouraged to report any instances of harassment or extortion by officials through designated hotlines.
