The Okoritak community in the Ibeno Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State is urging Host Community Development Trusts (HCDTs) to dedicate resources toward providing reliable and clean drinking water. This push aims to elevate local health standards and support the economic stability of residents. This request was formalized during a recent roundtable discussion titled Sustainable Development in Okoritak Community, which was facilitated by community leaders, the Clement Isong Foundation, and the Ibeno Youth Advocacy Network.
Okoritak has struggled with persistent water shortages for an extended period. In a formal statement released after the meeting, the community urged the Akwa Ibom State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency and other relevant government bodies to work more closely with HCDTs to extend essential services to neglected areas. Participants specifically commended the Seplat Host Community Development Trust for expressing interest in addressing the local water crisis in upcoming development cycles.
The attendees emphasized that future development initiatives should rely on participatory needs assessments to ensure investments accurately reflect community requirements. The community also requested that all future projects maintain transparency and inclusivity, involving local traditional leaders, women, and youth in the decision-making process. Finally, they noted that achieving long-term growth in the region depends on active cooperation between government agencies, the private sector, and community-based organizations.
