Edo NSCDC Detains Scrap Dealer Over Stolen School Assets in Benin

The Edo State NSCDC arrested a 61-year-old scrap dealer and retrieved stolen property following a raid on a dump site in Benin City that contained items taken from Oriohhene Primary School.

The Edo State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) successfully apprehended a scrap merchant and reclaimed stolen educational supplies in Benin. According to spokesperson CSC Ogbebor Efosa, a joint operation involving the NSCDC’s Safe Schools unit, the Ministry of Education, and the state scrap monitoring team discovered severe vandalism at Oriohhene Primary School in Oredo Local Government Area on June 25, 2026.

Authorities noted that thieves had stripped the facility of roofing materials, air conditioning units, and classroom seating. This investigation led officials to a dump site at 40 Evbienwen Street in the Iyaro neighborhood of Benin City. During the search, investigators located several stolen items, including various roofing panels.

The owner of the site, 61-year-old Aniemeka Hilary from Delta State, was taken into custody. While the suspect admitted to buying the vandalized goods from strangers, he expressed remorse for his role in the criminal enterprise. NSCDC State Commandant Akintayo Saidi Ayinla criticized the vandalism and cautioned all scrap operators in the region against purchasing stolen government equipment, promising strict legal consequences for those who participate in such illicit trade.
