Hong Myung-bo steps down as South Korea manager following World Cup departure

South Korea’s head coach, Hong Myung-bo, has resigned following the national team’s group-stage elimination from the World Cup.

South Korea head coach Hong Myung-bo submitted his resignation this Sunday, according to recent reports, just one day after the team was eliminated in the tournament’s group stage. The 57-year-old, who previously served as the national team captain, has now presided over two early World Cup exits during his coaching tenure, mirroring the team’s struggles in 2014.

Expectations were high for South Korea to advance from Group A, which featured co-hosts Mexico, South Africa, and the Czech Republic. However, the team ultimately fell short after suffering 1-0 defeats to both Mexico and South Africa. Their sole victory in the competition was a 2-1 result against the Czech Republic, leaving them with only three points. Despite aiming to qualify for the knockout phase as a top third-placed side, those prospects vanished following Saturday’s match outcomes. Yonhap News Agency confirmed that Hong chose to resign on Sunday, accepting full accountability for the team’s performance.
