The Anglican Diocese of Enugu has publicly criticized the Federal Government regarding the extended inactivity on the Port Harcourt to Maiduguri Eastern Rail Line project. During the 19th Synod, the church leadership characterized the ongoing neglect as a significant blow to both the regional economy of the South-East and the general well-being of the populace.
A formal communiqué issued by Bishop Samuel Obiajulu Ike and other church officials described the rail project as a persistent disappointment despite past government assurances. The Synod emphasized that completing this infrastructure is essential for improving transportation efficiency, lowering the cost of goods, and fostering greater regional integration.
Regarding the upcoming 2026 elections, the Synod cautioned politicians against using inflammatory language that could destabilize the nation. They explicitly called upon the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to maintain neutrality and provide an equitable environment for all electoral participants. Furthermore, the Church encouraged citizens to secure their Permanent Voter Cards and engage in the voting process to strengthen democratic governance.
Additionally, the Diocese established a strict policy against gender-based violence. The leadership confirmed that both clergy and lay members who commit such acts will face immediate ecclesiastical disciplinary actions, such as suspension or removal from their positions, and may be reported to law enforcement agencies for further legal consequences.
