The Akwa Ibom State branch of the Nigerian Medical Association has requested that Governor Umo Eno grant the Ibom Medical City Corridor the status of a Tax Incentive and Free Trade Zone. During the recent groundbreaking for the 350-bed facility, state NMA Chairman Professor Aniekan Peter explained that this designation is essential to draw in domestic and foreign investment.
Professor Peter noted that such an initiative would facilitate the arrival of top-tier hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, and medical supply manufacturers. This development would not only boost the local economy but also create numerous jobs. The association encouraged various healthcare stakeholders, including federal and private teaching institutions, to establish their operations within the hub to promote collaboration in research and clinical training.
Furthermore, the NMA advised the governor to engage medical professionals from Akwa Ibom currently working abroad. By utilizing their global expertise in hospital governance and clinical standards, the state can ensure the project meets international benchmarks. The association also advocated for transforming the Ibom Specialist Hospital into a medical university or teaching hospital. Finally, the NMA commended the government for upgrading the Ibom Specialist Hospital with advanced diagnostic tools, which is expected to decrease the necessity for patient referrals outside the state.
