Ogun State Court Ruling Bolsters Confidence in Justice for GBV Victims, Says Adeleye

Former Ogun Commissioner Adijat Adeleye lauds a life sentence for a child rapist, stating it restores public faith in the judicial protection of vulnerable citizens.

Adijat Adeleye, the former Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development in Ogun State, has praised the judicial system for its dedication to justice after a recent conviction in a child abuse trial. The Ogun State High Court in Ijebu Ode handed a life sentence to Emmanuel Obirija for the rape of a minor.

Justice Catherine Ogunsanya presided over the case, finding the defendant guilty of unlawful sexual intercourse with a child. Official reports indicate the case was initially brought to the Sexual Assault Referral Centre at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital in Sagamu on December 2, 2022.

In a statement released on Saturday, Adeleye highlighted that the ruling serves as a vital reminder that the legal system acts as a sanctuary for those seeking justice. She noted that this outcome reinforces hope for survivors of Gender-Based Violence and their families. Furthermore, Adeleye expressed gratitude toward the various professionals involved, including healthcare workers, police, prosecutors, and child advocates. She encouraged other victims to report abuse so that offenders are held accountable.
