Abia State clinches top spot at inaugural South-East Amateur Boxing Championship in Umuahia

Host state Abia secured the overall victory at the first South-East Amateur Boxing Championship held in Umuahia, topping the medal table with eight golds.

The inaugural South-East Amateur Boxing Championship for men and women concluded on Friday in Umuahia, Abia State. The host state secured the overall victory, finishing the competition with eight gold, three silver, and two bronze medals.

Enugu State claimed the runner-up position with four gold and four silver medals, followed by Imo State, which earned third place with one gold, one silver, and five bronze medals. Anambra State placed fourth with one gold and two bronze medals, while Ebonyi State finished with two silver and three bronze medals.

Abia State Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Nwaobilor Ananaba, officially closed the event. Speaking through Permanent Secretary Jane Igwe, the commissioner praised the athletes for their sportsmanship. He emphasized that Governor Alex Otti’s government remains focused on nurturing grassroots talent to cultivate future stars for both the state and the national level.

Abia State Director of Sports, Obioma George, extended his gratitude to the coaches, officials, and visiting teams for the success of the tournament. Chidiebere Chukwuemeka, identified as the tournament’s standout performer, expressed his ambition to compete for Nigeria on the international stage, including the Olympic Games.
