Legendary midfielder Alexia Putellas is nearing a transfer to the Women’s Super League side London City Lionesses. The 32-year-old, a two-time Ballon d’Or winner, departed Barcelona this past May after a 14-year tenure, cementing her status as an icon of the game.
Reports indicate that Putellas selected the South London outfit over interest from the American team Boston Legacy. While an official contract has yet to be finalized, the Lionesses are optimistic about securing the move. This represents a significant coup for the independent club, which finished sixth in its inaugural top-flight season.
Putellas leaves Barcelona with an extraordinary record, having secured 38 trophies, including 10 league titles and four Champions League victories. She scored 232 goals across 507 matches for the Catalan giants. Internationally, she helped Spain claim the 2023 World Cup title. Despite an ACL injury keeping her out of Euro 2022, she returned to form quickly, earning consecutive Ballon d’Or awards in 2021 and 2022. The Lionesses have pursued the star since January, and while she joins on a free transfer, the club has reportedly prepared a significant salary package to bring her to the league.
