UK Facing Potential Record-Breaking Warm June Night

The UK is bracing for potentially its warmest June night ever recorded, following a Thursday that saw record-breaking temperatures of 36.7C, leading to red heat warnings and significant infrastructure disruption.

Forecasters anticipate that the United Kingdom could face its warmest June night on record. This follows a sweltering Thursday that saw temperatures climb to 36.7C in Merryfield, Somerset, marking the highest temperature of the year and the hottest June day ever recorded in the country. The Met Office issued a rare red warning for extreme heat, which covers parts of England and Wales and highlights a genuine risk to life. This alert, which has been extended for a third day, impacts millions of residents.

The extreme weather has caused significant disruption, leading to school closures, the implementation of a hosepipe ban in Kent, and widespread travel issues. All four UK nations experienced their highest temperatures of the year on Thursday. Wales hit 35.6C in Cardiff, Scotland reached 31.2C in Threave, and Northern Ireland saw 30.0C in Castlederg.

Healthcare services are under immense pressure, with at least six NHS trusts declaring critical incidents. Reports indicate that the intense heat is interfering with hospital equipment, IT systems, and laboratory testing. Additionally, the London Ambulance Service reported a record surge in life-threatening emergencies. Tragically, a 50-year-old man died after entering the water at an Aberavon beach on Wednesday.

National Rail has advised the public to avoid travel within the red and amber warning zones unless absolutely necessary. The ongoing heatwave is attributed to a heat dome, a high-pressure system trapping warm air over Western Europe. Meteorologists note that the frequency of days exceeding 30C in the UK has more than tripled since the 1961-1990 period, suggesting a trend of rising temperatures in future years.
