Former world champion Joe Cordina faces assault and weapon charges

Welsh boxer Joe Cordina faces assault and weapon charges in Cardiff, while simultaneously dealing with a US visa denial that has forced the cancellation of his upcoming WBO lightweight title fight.

Professional boxer Joe Cordina is set to appear in court this July following charges related to an altercation at the Pentwyn Service Station in Cardiff on February 27, 2026. The 34-year-old athlete from Pontprennau has been formally charged with assault and threatening an individual with an offensive weapon in a public space. He is scheduled to attend Cardiff Magistrates’ Court on July 7. Another individual, 32-year-old Jamie O’Brien from Pentwyn, also faces an assault charge and is expected in court on July 28.

These legal developments coincide with a significant setback in Cordina’s boxing career. The Welshman was scheduled to challenge for the WBO lightweight title against American Abdullah Mason in Cleveland on July 4. However, Cordina reported that the United States embassy in London rejected his visa application, effectively canceling his travel plans and the upcoming title bout. Despite his efforts to provide supporting documentation, the embassy denied him entry.

Cordina, who previously held the IBF super-featherweight title, has been aiming to secure a world championship in a second weight class. After suffering his only career defeat against Anthony Cacace in 2024, he rebounded with victories over Jaret Gonzalez Quiroz and Gabriel Flores Jr. His decorated background includes success as an amateur Olympian and national champion.
