Monday Ubani, who chairs the Nigeria Bar Association Electoral Committee, asserts that Nigeria could achieve greater security if local government authorities are granted control over local safety initiatives. He shared this perspective during a Thursday appearance on the Arise Television program, ‘Morning Show’.
His comments follow the Senate’s Wednesday decision to approve the State Police Bill, a measure intended to combat the country’s escalating security challenges. Ubani emphasized that security is inherently local. He argued that local government chairmen possess the specific knowledge required to identify access points within their districts, enabling more effective collaboration with security agencies and state leadership.
According to Ubani, granting local governments autonomy over security matters is a necessary response to the shortcomings of the nation’s current centralized policing structure, which he believes has failed to preserve life and property. He further expressed support for the current administration and the 10th National Assembly, labeling their move toward decentralization as a significant, historic effort to bolster national protection.
