Abia State authorities attribute Owaza pipeline blast to infrastructure age

Abia State officials have linked the recent oil pipeline explosion in Umuololo Owaza to the equipment’s advanced age and have demanded immediate cleanup and infrastructure replacement from the operating company.

The Abia State administration has identified a seven-decade-old petroleum pipeline as the source of a destructive explosion in Umuololo Owaza, located in the Ukwa West Local Government Area. The incident, involving a line connected to Oil Mining Lease (OML) 11, occurred early Monday morning around 1:30 am, resulting in a significant oil spill that devastated local residences, agricultural land, schools, commercial shops, and livestock.

Government representatives, including Commissioner for Environment Philemon Asonye Ogbonna and Commissioner for Petroleum and Mineral Resources Professor Joel Ogbonna, visited the scene to assess the wreckage. While no fatalities were reported, the officials noted extensive property damage. Professor Ogbonna stated that initial investigations suggest the aging infrastructure was overdue for decommissioning. He has ordered the operating company to execute an immediate cleanup and replace the dilapidated pipeline to mitigate future risks.

Commissioner Philemon Asonye Ogbonna confirmed that the state government is tracking the situation closely and remains committed to defending local communities from environmental hazards under Governor Alex Otti’s leadership. Local resident David Nwogu, whose home was severely impacted, alleged that the 1958 pipeline suffered from chronic lack of maintenance, which likely precipitated the failure.
