The Obidient Movement recently issued a sharp critique of the Nigerian Presidency, arguing that government officials cannot simply ignore the widespread hunger and insecurity currently affecting the nation. This reaction followed comments made by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, who claimed during an interview on Arise TV that he did not perceive the level of hunger being reported by citizens.
In a statement titled ‘From Renewed Hope to Renewed Denial: Tinubu’s Government Cannot wish Away the Hunger and Insecurity Facing Nigerians,’ the group characterized Onanuga’s remarks as deeply offensive to the millions of citizens struggling to make ends meet. They argued that such comments demonstrate that the current administration is severely disconnected from the daily struggles of the populace, pointing to rising costs of basic food items and the closure of small businesses as evidence of a failing economy.
The organization highlighted the stark contrast between current economic conditions and those prior to 2015, noting that essential goods were far more affordable at that time. Furthermore, the Movement contrasted President Bola Tinubu’s past activism against the administration of Goodluck Jonathan with his current leadership, suggesting that the country is now facing even more severe challenges. The group concluded by asserting that the current government’s performance has fallen short of public expectations, worsening the economic situation for ordinary Nigerians.
