Most Rev. Dr. David O. C. Onuoha, National President of the Christian Council of Nigeria, has criticized the Presidency for labeling the recent statements from Catholic Bishops as politically motivated. Speaking in Owerri, Onuoha emphasized that the Bishops addressed issues affecting every citizen, regardless of their religious or ethnic background.
He argued that the Federal Government should view the Church as a collaborator rather than an adversary. Instead of dismissing complaints regarding poverty, insecurity, and hardship, the government ought to acknowledge the reality of the situation. Onuoha pointed out that religious leaders maintain close contact with both urban and rural populations and are well-positioned to provide an accurate assessment of how government policies impact daily life.
The Archbishop warned the President against staff members who misrepresent the nation’s state to protect their positions, characterizing these individuals as actual enemies of the state. He urged the government to show the courage to accept uncomfortable truths. Furthermore, Onuoha suggested that the recent government reforms have caused more hardship than success, and stressed that citizens expect a policy review to improve their safety and economic well-being.
