Fatality reported and multiple workers trapped following Port Harcourt building collapse

A four-story building under construction in Port Harcourt collapsed on Wednesday, resulting in at least one death and multiple people trapped as rescue operations continue.

A four-story structure currently being built in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has fallen, leaving multiple individuals buried under the ruins. This disaster took place on Wednesday morning, occurring just two days after a different three-story building crumbled in the Rumuolumeni area of the city.

Witnesses reported that at least seven people were initially pinned under the debris, with local residents managing to pull two survivors to safety shortly after the collapse. One person who remained trapped could be heard crying out in pain, but rescuers were unable to reach them. Reports suggest that the project’s supervising engineer is among those caught under the rubble, and one deceased individual has already been recovered.

Authorities, including Commissioner of Police Olugbenga Adepoju and state urban planning officials, have deployed emergency response teams to the site. This includes representatives from NEMA, the fire department, the Red Cross, and medical services.

A carpenter on the project, Oladimeji Taiwo, stated that the site engineer had alerted workers to the danger just minutes before the structure gave way, citing visible cracks in the walls. Taiwo, who was outside when the collapse occurred, estimated that up to 10 people remained inside the building at the time. By Wednesday afternoon, three victims had been rescued, and search efforts continue for those still missing.
