IOC Introduces New $10,000 Financial Grant for Future Olympians

The International Olympic Committee will award $10,000 grants to every future Olympian per Games to support their sporting careers and transitions, excluding those who violate ethics codes.

The International Olympic Committee has launched the ‘fit for the future Olympian grant,’ providing $10,000 to every athlete for each Olympic Games in which they participate. This financial support is designed to assist competitors with their professional careers or transitions away from sports. Approximately 14,000 athletes per Games are expected to qualify, with a total fund of $140 million allocated for each event.

Athletes who have taken part in this year’s Winter Olympics are eligible to apply first. However, the funding is strictly withheld from any competitor found guilty of anti-doping violations or breaches of the Olympic Charter, the IOC code of ethics, or participation conditions. The program will be administered through National Olympic Committees and remains independent of existing support structures.

Pau Gasol, chair of the IOC athletes’ commission, emphasized that the initiative honors the dedication and sacrifices required to reach the Olympic level rather than functioning as traditional prize money. While World Athletics has independently begun offering prize money for gold medalists, the IOC maintains a different approach, prioritizing direct assistance for athletes throughout their careers. The application process for 2026 Olympians is slated to open late this year, with disbursements scheduled for 2027.
