The Abia State Government has officially started enforcing a ban on motorcycle operations within Aba, Umuahia, and Ohafia. Authorities have cautioned that anyone caught violating these rules will face a fine of N50,000, and their vehicles will be impounded.
Prince Okey Kanu, the Commissioner for Information, announced that operators who lose their bikes must settle the fine within 30 days to reclaim them. This policy is a strategic move to boost regional security and safeguard the public. Kanu noted that every motorcycle in the state, whether used for private business, courier services, or commercial transport, must be officially registered.
Enforcement teams, including the Abia State Harmonised Task Force and local security agencies, will oversee the crackdown. Registered riders will be required to wear specific colour-coded reflective vests tied to their senatorial districts and display unique identification numbers. Additionally, those registered for courier and delivery duties are strictly prohibited from transporting passengers.
While acknowledging potential disruptions for residents, the government emphasized that these measures are essential for public safety. Retired Navy Commander MacDonald Uba, Special Adviser on Security, added that the registration system will help authorities monitor and maintain accountability more effectively. Governor Alex Otti’s administration is currently reviewing alternative transport options to help mitigate the impact of these changes on citizens.
