The Islamic Movement in Nigeria, under the guidance of Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky, plans to conduct Ashura processions throughout the nation this Friday. These events honor the death of Imam Husain, who was the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad.
Organizers confirmed that gatherings will occur in over 600 locations spanning 23 states and the Federal Capital Territory. A statement released on Wednesday explained that the date was adjusted to Muharram 11, 1448 AH, ensuring synchronization with observances in Karbala, Iraq, the site of the historical 680 AD battle.
The movement emphasized that this yearly tradition holds deep religious value for Shia Muslims globally. While the Ashura period traditionally begins on the 10th of Muharram, this specific event reflects the ongoing mourning for the Imam and his supporters.
For over 30 years, the Islamic Movement has held these activities within Nigeria. Historically, these large-scale gatherings have drawn significant attendance in urban centers, occasionally leading to discussions regarding public safety and security protocols.
