Okpoko’s remarkable journey from neglected slum to thriving urban hub

Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration has transformed the once-neglected Okpoko slum into a vibrant urban area, boosting property values and improving local infrastructure.

For over five decades, the densely populated Okpoko community in Anambra State’s Ogbaru Local Government Area suffered from profound government neglect. Once viewed as a haven for criminal activity and a symbol of poverty, the area lacked basic utilities and infrastructure. Residents long endured flooding, crime, and a lack of essential services, with many believing the situation would never improve.

The administration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo has shifted this narrative. After taking office, Soludo initiated a comprehensive remodeling of the area. By clearing illegal structures and expanding road networks, the government has facilitated significant development. Modern street lights, water supplies, and renovated schools now define the landscape. Chief Okechukwu Odidika, a community stakeholder, noted that property values have surged dramatically, with some assets increasing in price from millions to billions of naira due to the new infrastructure.

Traders at the Ogbaru Main Market have also expressed gratitude, noting that improved road access has simplified the transportation of goods. While many residents credit Soludo for the transformation and support his leadership, some stakeholders, including Sir Charles Ezeokafor, suggest that more work is needed. Specifically, they point to a need for increased school capacity, further road rehabilitation, and urgent measures to mitigate flooding that continues to pose a threat to the community.
