Legal standoff over ADC leadership: Court reschedules Nafiu Bala’s case against David Mark to June 30

The Federal High Court in Abuja has delayed the lawsuit filed by Nafiu-Bala Gombe against David Mark and others over the leadership status of the ADC until June 30.

On Tuesday, the Federal High Court in Abuja postponed a legal challenge initiated by Mr. Nafiu-Bala Gombe regarding the leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The lawsuit aims to prevent David Mark and other individuals from acting as the party’s official leaders, with proceedings now set for June 30.

The scheduled hearing could not proceed due to the absence of Mr. Suleiman Usman, the attorney representing David Mark. Justice Peter Lifu initially paused the session for 15 minutes to allow the lawyer time to arrive. Once that grace period elapsed and a separate case concluded, the judge rose, leading the legal teams to select a new date.

Previously, on June 16, Justice Lifu rejected requests from the ADC and Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola to recuse himself from the case. The judge ruled those motions meritless and ordered both the party and Aregbesola to pay N1 million each to Gombe. The underlying lawsuit, filed by Gombe under case number FHC/ABJ/CS/1819/2025, alleges that the appointment of the interim National Working Committee, led by Mark and Aregbesola, violated both the Electoral Act and the party’s constitution.
