Garba Musa Maidoki, the senator representing Kebbi South, has officially left the All Progressives Congress (APC) to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC). This move follows persistent disagreements stemming from the party’s recent primary elections.
Maidoki, who currently leads the Senate Committee on Legislative Compliance, confirmed his departure in a formal letter to the Senate President. He noted that he made the choice after extensive discussions with his constituents. Maidoki was previously excluded from the APC primary process.
During Tuesday’s plenary session, Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau attempted to persuade Maidoki to reconsider. Barau characterized the tension in Kebbi as a minor internal family matter rather than a deep-seated crisis and requested that the defection be delayed to allow for mediation. However, Maidoki stood by his decision, asserting that his mind was already made up. This exit reflects a growing trend of lawmakers leaving the ruling party due to dissatisfaction with internal processes, further strengthening the ADC’s position as an alternative option as the 2027 elections approach.
