Presidency Rejects Peter Obi’s Resignation Demand, Labels It Superficial

The Presidency has dismissed Peter Obi’s call for President Tinubu’s resignation as an empty political distraction, citing the fundamental differences between Nigeria’s presidential system and the British parliamentary model.

The Nigerian Presidency has dismissed demands from Peter Obi, the 2027 presidential candidate for the National Democratic Congress, for President Bola Tinubu to step down. Obi had drawn a parallel between Nigeria’s leadership and the voluntary resignation of the British Prime Minister, a comparison the government deemed both immature and lacking in substance.

Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga released a statement in Abuja, arguing that Obi’s rhetoric functions as a political distraction rather than a genuine attempt at accountability. The administration noted that Nigeria follows a fixed four-year presidential term, unlike the UK’s parliamentary framework, rendering Obi’s comparisons fundamentally flawed.

The Presidency highlighted recent electoral successes for the All Progressives Congress in Ekiti, Nasarawa, Enugu, Ondo, and Rivers as evidence of the current administration’s public support. They urged Obi to reserve his criticism for the ballot box in 2027 instead of using social media to challenge the mandate of a sitting president.

Addressing claims of economic and security failures, the government countered that President Tinubu inherited a distressed economy and systemic security threats. Officials cited the neutralization of thousands of terrorists, increased oil production, and record-high foreign reserves as indicators of progress. Furthermore, they pointed to the stabilization of the stock market and the consistent growth of GDP as proof that the administration’s bold fiscal policies are yielding results.

The government also defended its record on infrastructure and power, noting that the Electricity Act now allows states to manage their own power generation. They concluded that Obi’s persistent focus on negative narratives reveals an isolation from the country’s actual progress, characterizing his claims as a creation of his own imagination.
