Residents of Edjekota-Ogor in Delta State’s Ughelli North Local Government Area are currently unsettled following a violent encounter on Monday. An unidentified man was assaulted by gunmen while heading home with supplies for his baby.
According to Pastor Oghenemakpo Uyo, the community’s President-General, the perpetrators appeared from a bush path along the Oviri-Ogor/Edjekota-Ogor Road. The assailants tried to abduct the victim, but he resisted. The men then wounded him with machetes and fired gunshots. Local vigilantes intervened, causing the attackers to retreat into the vegetation, leaving behind a bag of ammunition, a machete, and personal belongings.
The injured man is currently undergoing treatment. He explained that three armed men approached him during his errand, demanding he go with them before turning violent. In the aftermath, community members apprehended suspected herders seeking food, turning them over to the police.
The incident has sparked alarm throughout the region. Hon. Obakpororo Johnny, a former legislative aspirant, has urged both state and federal authorities to prioritize safety in rural zones. Separately, reports indicate a TANTITA Security Services Nigeria Limited patrol narrowly avoided an ambush in the vicinity. Delta State Police spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, has not yet issued an official statement regarding these events.
