Argentina marks 40th anniversary of Maradona’s iconic World Cup display

Argentina celebrated Diego Maradona’s legacy on the 40th anniversary of his iconic 1986 World Cup performance during their match against Austria.

On Monday, Argentina supporters, players, and staff paid tribute to the late Diego Maradona as the team competed in their second 2026 FIFA World Cup match against Austria in Dallas. The date holds historical weight, as it signifies exactly four decades since Maradona delivered a legendary performance in a 2-1 quarter-final win over England during the 1986 tournament.

During that famous match, Maradona famously netted the “Hand of God” goal alongside the “Goal of the Century,” in which he dribbled through the entire English defense. This historic day is celebrated in Argentina as the Day of the Argentine Footballer. Even years after his passing in 2020 at age 60, Maradona stays a symbol of national pride, frequently mentioned alongside Lionel Messi.

Supporters in Kansas City and Dallas have been showcasing massive banners and tributes to honor the 1986 hero. Head coach Lionel Scaloni fondly remembered watching that historic game on a small television at his grandmother’s home. He expressed that the anniversary would be a moment for both reflection and emotion. Interestingly, Austria is also linked to Maradona’s history, as he netted his only international hat-trick against them during a 5-1 win in 1980.
