Sir Jeffrey Donaldson’s trajectory in Northern Irish politics was marked by two significant Good Friday events, starting with his opposition to the 1998 peace agreement and ending with his 2024 arrest on sexual abuse charges. Originally a member of the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP), Donaldson defected to the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) in 2003, where he rose through the ranks to eventually become leader.
His career peaked in early 2024 when he successfully negotiated his party’s return to power-sharing at Stormont, a victory he celebrated in Washington D.C. just weeks before his downfall. Shortly after this high point, he was arrested and subsequently found guilty of 18 sexual offense charges, including rape.
Throughout his time in Westminster, Donaldson was known as a polished operator. He played a central role during the DUP’s confidence-and-supply agreement with Theresa May’s Conservative government.
