Plateau State violence claims 22 lives as health facility comes under fire

A brutal night raid on Kawel village in Plateau State has resulted in 22 deaths, including health workers and patients, as local security tensions continue to mount.

The number of fatalities following the Sunday evening raid on Kawel village, situated in the Mushere District of Bokkos, Plateau State, has climbed to 22. Among the deceased are medical staff, patients, and members of security forces.

Locals reported that gunmen descended upon the village late at night, indiscriminately shooting at inhabitants. An emergency responder from the Red Cross confirmed that the militants targeted the local Primary Health Care Centre, killing staff members and those seeking medical attention. Many other individuals suffered gunshot or machete wounds and were transported to hospitals for urgent care.

Christopher Luka, the youth leader for Bokkos, corroborated the rising death count after inspecting the local hospital. He noted that the burials have been delayed due to persistent rainfall. This tragedy follows closely behind the murder of the Gwande District Head, Saf Samuel Alaket, who was killed while traveling home from a council event recently. Authorities from the Plateau State Police Command and Operation Safe Haven have yet to comment on the escalating security crisis.
