The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) is encouraging Nigerians dealing with drug dependence to utilize its nonstop counseling and referral program. Shadrach Haruna, the agency’s Secretary, shared this message during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja to mark the 2026 United Nations International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. He emphasized that expert guidance is accessible at any time for those managing substance use disorders.
Haruna appealed to the loved ones of those struggling with addiction to reach out to the NDLEA, noting that recovery is achievable through proper intervention. The agency operates a dedicated helpline, 0800-1020-3040, branded as the 247-Network, which provides immediate, multilingual support in Pidgin, Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, and English. Skilled social psychologists staff this line to offer advice and connect callers with nearby rehabilitation facilities.
The NDLEA considers rehabilitation a core component of its strategy, alongside law enforcement and awareness campaigns. To expand its reach, the agency is now collaborating with faith-based organizations and religious leaders. These groups assist by providing moral guidance, counseling, and direct family support, effectively acting as key partners in promoting recovery and prevention at the grassroots level. Haruna reiterated that the agency remains dedicated to scaling up these services and working with community stakeholders to decrease the demand for illegal substances across the country.
