In Abuja, the Federal High Court has ordered that 37-year-old Zakaria Garba be put to death by hanging. This ruling follows his involvement in the 2014 bombing at Nyanya Motor Park, an incident that resulted in extensive casualties.
Justice James Omotosho issued the judgment as part of a collective trial for individuals accused of terrorism within the Federal Capital Territory. Garba had previously entered a guilty plea to a five-count charge brought forward by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation.
The 2014 explosion at the outskirts of Abuja remains a significant tragedy, with at least 70 fatalities and numerous injuries reported. Under the case reference FHC/KNJ/CR/985/2026, the court applied different sentences for each charge. Specifically, Garba received two 35-year prison terms, a life sentence, and two death sentences by hanging.
Justice Omotosho stated that the evidence and the defendant’s confession confirmed his role in the fatal attack. This legal outcome is representative of ongoing government initiatives to prosecute terrorism suspects and provide justice for victims of past violence.
