Andy Murray Returns to Coaching: Why He Joined Jack Draper and His Thoughts on Serena Williams

Andy Murray has emerged from retirement to coach Jack Draper for the grass-court season, while sharing his perspective on Serena Williams’ comeback and his own life beyond professional tennis.

Andy Murray is trading his retirement for the coaching box, joining fellow Briton Jack Draper ahead of the grass-court season. After departing from his coaching stint with Novak Djokovic 18 months ago, Murray had focused on family life, golf, and his business interests, initially dismissing the idea of returning to a professional coaching role. However, when Draper reached out, the former world number one agreed to help his childhood idol’s successor.

Murray intends to act as a mentor, similar to the partnership he shared with Ivan Lendl. Currently, the duo is focused on getting Draper back to full fitness after a difficult year marked by recurring injuries. Murray remains confident in Draper’s ability to compete at the elite level once consistency is restored.

Regarding Serena Williams’ return to the court, Murray expressed little surprise. The two, who famously played mixed doubles at Wimbledon in 2019, previously discussed their feelings toward the game. While Williams confessed to missing competition daily, Murray admits he does not share that sentiment. Though he remains active in other pursuits—including golf, chess, and managing his hotel—he definitively ruled out a competitive comeback for himself at age 44, citing physical limitations and a lack of desire to return to the tour.
